Greater Manchester Police +
Manchester Central Park is the UK’s first large scale Urban Business Park and is being developed on behalf of Manchester City Council by ASK:Goodman, a joint venture partnership formed between Goodman and regional developer, ASK Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is the largest police force in the UK outside London, serving some two and a half million people and covering an area of 500 square miles. GMP required a ‘state of the art’ headquarters building to provide the most advanced and flexible facilities for its staff. The challenge was to create an extremely sustainable public building against an agreed cost and programme to suit the diverse requirements of GMP whilst integrating the facility within an urban business park.
This project set out to provide a new 242,000 sq. ft. headquarters for GMP which would have a distinctive strong, iconic and civic identity thus creating an internal environment that would be a pleasure to work in. In particular, the building needed to promote new ways of working, enabling GMP the flexibility to respond to the ever changing needs of a modern police force.
The Goodman Solution
Under the stewardship of global property group Goodman, the project team worked tirelessly in reviewing, testing, and appraising every aspect of the project in infinite detail, to ensure that the aspirations of GMP would be exceeded, in order to create a building of which both GMP and the local community can be rightly proud. Achieving an energy efficient, sustainable building was also a central concern of every stage of the building’s delivery.
At the heart of the design process was the need to ensure that on arrival at entry into and movement through the building, the quality of the finishes were dramatic, exciting, inspiring and welcoming. The end result is that the development creates an internal environment that provides a sense of drama, inspires the individual and lifts the spirits. The end user experience has informed the design of the building from the outset, through the provision of shared dining facilities, multiple opportunities for informal meeting, breakout, relaxation spaces, external staff amenity areas, and a working environment of the highest quality. The facility achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating on completion. As regional and national winner of a coveted British Council of Offices (BCO) Award for Best Corporate Workplace 2012 this project is testament to the principle that through detailed consideration of customer requirements and a process of reviewing, appraising and considering detailed design solutions, a building of the highest quality can be created whilst value for money is maximised.
